A guide to free to enter competitions in the UK

There are loads of websites like ours running free UK competitions and if you've been a comper for a while now, you'll know that the Money Saving Expert competitions forum and Loquax are two of the very best places to find them. Here are a few tips for new compers looking for free contests:

1. Be careful who you're handing your data to, especially if you're entering through an aggragate website like Good Housekeeping or Marie Claire Competitions. Sites like these promote the free competitions on behalf of third party companies and have no direct control how the third parties use your data. Some entrants have reported excessive telephone and email spam after taking part, so do check the terms of entry, especially the privacy policy. We don't sell your data, and we only share it with people for the purpose of getting your prize to you (e.g. Royal Mail, Fedex!).
2. Avoid any "free entry" competition website that asks for payment after you've won a "free" comp. Any costs associated with claiming the prize must be made crystal clear before entering the draw (a legitimate example might be a free competition for a luxury break, where you have to arrange your own transport). If you receive an unexpected demand for a fee after entering and "winning", this is almost certainly a scam and would likely be considered an "illegal lottery" by the Gambling Commission.
3. Although the prize is free, remember that prizes have to be funded somehow. Engage with companies rather than viewing them as a nuisance - otherwise, the prize pool will dry up! Companies often use competitions to promote products or services, attract social media followers or to get newsletter signups. While we would not expect you to shop with every company that runs a draw, do them the courtesy of a little consideration, a like or share and a winner's photo to make their giveaway more of a success. This can only mean more comps in the future!
4. Sadly, some less reputable businesses may use their newly acquired contacts from free to enter competitions to send an excessive amount of spam. You can deal with this either by using email filters (Gmail is good for this) or setting up a separate email account. Don't block their emails - you might miss a winner notification; and if one of the requirements of winning is to be on a mailing list, don't remove yourself until you're sure the competition has finished!
